CHAPTER 15
He slept for a couple of hours, then someone brought him some eggs and toast. After eating he felt a lot brighter and picked up the letter that the man in black had left. There were four elongated circles in four colours - red, blue, pink, yellow. Where they all intersected was jade green and titled Mother Earth. The red circle was labeled Long Run, the blue Green on Green, pink was titled Keith Perez, the yellow, Honest Joe. All these elements were related to Mother Earth but in addition there were arrows laid out clockwise, linking one circle to another, as though to suggest that not only were they all brought together by Mother Earth, but also had a relationship to each other. He shook his head, trying to work it out. Why not just write this shit out, rather than make a diagram? It made it look like a school project.
Picking up his now fully charged phone he went online and via the quick code the man in black had put on his phone, arrived at a blank page with a login and password box. He entered the string of letters and numbers and clicked enter. It loaded a screen which said, Hello Artie. We hope you're feeling better. We'll do what we can to help you. We are the Paleo Patriots. We're dedicated to changing America's health by promoting a grass-fed paleo diet as the norm, to end the mass consumption of carbohydrate and processed food and the industrialized intensive farming of animals.
Oh, Christ, they were more nutters. And food nutters, next to gun nutters, are the biggest nutters of all. He read on.
We have been investigating the Long Run Investment Group for some time. They own Green on Green and the Mother Earth chain of vegan stores. They have a lot of money in the soy industry. It's our belief that they are trying to corrupt their own products in order to undermine their own business, to scare away trade from the stores and their brands, to put people off being vegans and back to meat eating. They are huge investors in feedlots. You exposed their plans when the soy jerky tested positive for mercury and as a result they have tried to kill you and accelerated their campaign to undermine their own company. They won't stop now. The names on the document are Green on Green executives past and present who we think might be sympathetic to our cause. Go and talk to them. We will help you gather evidence against Long Run. We will put updated info here. Be careful at all times and trust no-one.
Artie read it through again and let out a groan. This was garbage, surely. It read like something from a cheap movie. It had to be some sort of sick joke or just the work of weirdo conspiracy theorists. They'd gone to a lot of effort, though. How had they found out about the mercury poisoning? That man couldn't have known Carly, could he? Maybe the hospital had put out a press release.
